Oral hygiene

Oral hygiene

Scaling, sandblasting, and fluoridation are three important treatments that help keep teeth properly clean. Provided they are performed at least once every few months (no less than once a year). Oral hygiene in a dental office does not require the presence of a dentist. It is performed by a dental hygienist. The treatment time is usually several minutes and is basically completely painless. In people with high sensitivity, it may cause only a feeling of slight discomfort.

Scaling

The first element of professional dental cleaning is scaling, which is the mechanical or chemical removal of dental calculus (tartar). The most widespread method today is ultrasonic scaling. Teeth are cleaned using a vibrating tip that chips away the tartar. In order to cool the instrument and completely clean the teeth of any remaining calculus particles, the device is equipped with a water spray that flushes away the debris. There are also scaling instruments that use sound waves or laser waves.  The operation of these devices is similar to that of an ultrasonic scaler.  The procedure can also be performed using chemical agents that dissolve the dental calculus. The dissolved tartar is then removed by rinsing the mouth thoroughly.

Depending on the location of the tartar removal, two types of scaling are performed:

  • supragingival – removal of tartar from the crown of the tooth, usually carried out using the ultrasonic scaling method; it can be performed by a dental hygienist

  • subgingival – removal of tartar from beneath the gum line, performed using ultrasound and a curette - a tool that allows access to the crevices under the gums to clean them effectively. Subgingival scaling is a surgical procedure and is typically performed by a dentist.

Patients tolerate dental scaling well. In case of gum hypersensitivity or when performing subgingival scaling, local anesthesia can be applied.

Sandblasting

The second stage of oral hygiene is sandblasting.

The sandblasting procedure is painless and involves cleaning the teeth with a special device (a sandblaster) that directs a stream of dental sand under appropriate pressure towards the teeth, removing stains from them. Although sandblasting teeth is not mandatory during oral hygiene,  it is recommended to be performed to remove potential inflammatory foci, remove tooth discoloration, or simply for aesthetic reasons. Contraindications to the procedure may include inflammation of the oral cavity (e.g., serious cavities and significantly developed tooth decay) and gingivitis. Most patients tolerate the tooth sandblasting procedure very well. The patient feels a slight tingling sensation in the area where the dental sand is applied.  The dental sand, along with the water stream, is suctioned out of the oral cavity using a dental suction tip.

Fluoridation

Stage Three - Fluoridation

The fluoridation treatment in a dental office involves placing a highly concentrated foam or gel on the teeth for a few minutes, which is then absorbed by the teeth. Fluoride is commonly used in dentistry to strengthen enamel - the outer layer of the teeth. Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. After the treatment, it is recommended to avoid eating or drinking highly staining beverages or foods.

Guided Biofilm Therapy

At Luxdentica Dental Center we use the most modern of oral hygiene methods. It is Guided Biofilm Therapy. GBT includes treatment protocols based on an individual diagnosis of the patient's oral cavity. The treatment is conducted in a minimally invasive manner, while maintaining the maximum level of comfort and safety. GBT also includes oral hygiene instruction with the use of electric toothbrushes and irrigators, as well as patient education for keeping their own teeth and implants for as long as possible.
