How to prepare a child for their first visit to the dentist?

Positive thinking and proper preparation of a child for their first visit to the dentist is the key to later success, which will undoubtedly be the fact that the child will react with a smile to the very word "dentist". What can be done to make this happen? How to ensure toddlers' psychological comfort during a visit to the dentist?

Soothe the fear

These are not easy answers, as they depend on many factors. Often, fear makes things look worse than they are, and children tend to magnify their anxiety. A lot depends on the child's personality, their previous experiences with doctors, and the moment they first encountered not only a dentist but other medical professionals. Certainly, pain is one of the most significant factors. If, for some reason, the child is exposed to pain during their first visit to the dentist, it will be very difficult for them to accept subsequent visits in a positive way.

It would probably be ideal for a child to have regular contact with a dentist from a very young age (or even months). Becoming familiar with such a situation builds trust, but in reality, we all know that many parents only take their toddler for a visit when something bad is already happening to their teeth. We all know that shouldn't be the case, but that's just how life is. In such situations, we must apply several very important measures "on the spot".

First of all, let's not show the child that we are worried. Let's treat the visit as if we were going for a pleasant walk or for ice cream. Let's not rush unless it's absolutely necessary. Usually, several days pass from the moment of booking the appointment to the actual visit to the dental clinic. Let's use this time to get our little one comfortable with the new topic and give them a sense of confidence that visiting the dentist is nothing to be afraid of. But how exactly do we convince a toddler that a visit to the dental clinic can be nice and pleasant?

Here are a few ways:

  • Reading books or watching movies about dentist visits. Children will be more willing to visit the dentist's office if they see their favorite characters visiting the dentist.

  • Bring your favorite toys with you. With a favorite teddy bear or doll, the visit will become more pleasant and easier to bear.

  • Playing dentist at home. Try to improvise a scene together, using positive phrases, e.g., "the dentist is going to count your teeth now" instead of "don't worry, it won't hurt".

  • Use the positive experiences of older siblings.

  • Rely on proven and good dentists; ideally, it should always be the same trusted "uncle" or "aunt" dentist.

  • If possible, arrange an adaptation visit during which the child can get used to the new place.

  • Once the little patient sits in the chair, it is worth choosing Wand-type anesthesia; make sure, together with the dentist, that nothing hurts during the first procedure.

  • Reward after every visit. By appreciating the child's effort, reinforce their positive thinking about the next visit.

Friendly play area

At the Luxdentica Dental Center in Krakow, we pay special attention to children. We have created special conditions for them so that dental treatment is associated with them in a positive and good way. Not only have we prepared a friendly play area where our young patients wait for their dentist appointment, but we have also implemented a unique program "Education in a Smile". It is based on organizing adaptation visits during which we teach children in the form of play. We show them how to take care of their teeth, explain who the dentist is, and how they can help us when a tooth hurts. The aim of this campaign is to raise a generation that will not be afraid of the dentist, and visits to the dental clinic will be a natural and permanent element of taking care of health.
