We are bound by broken teeth
They play so badly that it makes your teeth hurt. Our teeth hurt when we watch the Polish national team's matches. Fortunately, however, these are phantom pains - related to the psychophysical experience of negative emotions that overcome fans watching the performances of Polish footballers at the World Cup.
Contact sports and teeth
With Argentina, or a toothache 4 years ago in a match against Japan, the pain passes over time, but it's worse when a pitch injury is real and you cannot properly prepare for it beforehand or appropriately anesthetize it.
In contact sports such as football, hockey, rugby, not to mention MMA or boxing, knocked-out teeth, broken noses, craniofacial, jaw, and mandible injuries are not uncommon. During the World Cup in Qatar so far, there have been no serious injuries, including knocked-out or broken teeth, but it is precisely the latter that are the most common reasons for interventions by dental surgeons, prosthodontists, or implantologists.
Teeth can be knocked out very easily; it is harder to... find them. 4 years ago, Uruguayan footballer Diego Godín lost as many as three teeth and additionally broke three jaw bones. After the match, Atlético staff searched for the knocked-out teeth on the pitch because, according to specialists, they remain viable for up to 48 hours and can be "inserted" back in during this time.- reported sport.pl
Tooth avulsion and time
It's true, in the event of knocked-out teeth, it is worth quickly taking them with you and going to a specialist. Time is of the essence here.
A knocked-out tooth should be picked up by the crown, never by the root, rinsed under running water, and either placed back in the socket or put in milk or (if we have one) placed in a saline solution. There is always some probability that a knocked-out but undamaged tooth will get its second life. But, in the reimplantation process, every second, minute, or hour counts. The sooner the tooth is in the hands of an experienced dentist, the better for the condition of our teeth.
In March of this year, Polish media reported: Polish national team footballer Kamil Glik received a blow to the head after an opposing player tried to clear the ball with a bicycle kick. The center-back lost two teeth in this clash! - reported sport.fakt.pl). As it turned out, in the case of our representative, the broken front tooth (incisor) was effectively secured and reconstructed. When the damage to the tooth is minimal, filling with a light-cured material is usually sufficient. In the case of extensive trauma, a prosthetic restoration is introduced. Crowns, veneers, and in extreme cases, when the tooth cannot be repaired - implants. Kamil Glik was quite lucky and his teeth were quickly and well secured by good dentists.
But as it turns out, Polish footballers are not only victims, they are also perpetrators. In 2018, Kamil Wilczek brutally fouled his opponent during Sunday's Danish league match between Broendby Copenhagen and Velje BK. Bosnian defender Kerim Memija has a broken jaw after the clash with the Pole. – reported sport.pl.
A broken jaw or mandible is already a very big problem managed by maxillofacial surgeons, who perform surgeries in hospital or outpatient conditions. Unlike dental surgery, the main area of which is covering the treatment of pathologies within the oral cavity, maxillofacial surgery most often includes surgical interventions resulting from accidents (trauma surgery) or the treatment of developmental disorders and congenital defects in the craniofacial areas. We do not know the further fate of the kicked Bosnian, but the Polish striker returned to the league pitches after years spent in Denmark. And here...
Another Polish Kamil, this time - Kamil Żołna, captain of Rekord Bielsko-Biała, had to go straight from the pitch for a dental procedure.- informed sportdziennik.com "Two front teeth were knocked out, the lateral incisor was chipped, and the teeth got stuck in the gum" - listed the Rekord captain, who quickly went to the nearest emergency dental clinic, where the dentist initially estimated the costs of the procedure at PLN 1,300 and the possibility of an optional implant procedure for PLN 5,000. And that's not the end of the costs because the footballer's "lateral incisor was also loose."
Summary
As you can see - and not only from the perspective of the Polish football backyard - teeth can be lost very quickly, sometimes of one's own free will, sometimes completely by accident. And it only depends on the level of the league and earnings whether the footballer will quickly and bravely lick his wounds and recover from the injury. Who knows, however, if the fans don't have it worse, because teeth can also be ruined by nerves, e.g., by grinding them in anger while watching the World Cup, but not only, achievements of our players.
