Measurement of implant integration with bone

Measurement of implant integration with bone

Implant placement is now a fairly quick process. Just a few years ago, the standard procedure lasted at least 6 months in the upper jaw and 3 months in the lower jaw. Now, this time can be shortened to 8 weeks. That is why it is extremely important for the dentist to be sure that the bone on which the dental implant is to be attached is properly prepared.

Method

This can be verified using a special device. Such a diagnostic instrument used to assess implant stability is the Osstell ISQ.

The Osstell ISQ provides the dentist with very accurate measurements, which are essential for deciding when the implants can be loaded by attaching the actual tooth to them. This helps to avoid failure in the form of potential later rejection or loosening of the implant.

It is difficult to objectively assess implant stability based solely on hand feel and torque values.  That is why at Luxdentica we use the Osstell ISQ. By analyzing the resonance frequency of the implant under the influence of electromagnetic pulses, we are able to assess the osseointegration of endosseous implants – effectively and painlessly. Only accurate measurements of implant stability ensure successful treatment. A high level of primary stability allows for immediate loading, while a low level rather suggests delaying loading, allowing for healing and further monitoring of the progress of bone-to-implant integration.

How does the meter work?

The lateral stability of the implant depends on the rigidity of the bond between the implant surface and the surrounding bone. This rigidity is measured by placing a special SmartPeg measuring tip on the implant. The Osstell instrument is then brought close to it, which stimulates the probe with magnetic pulses, and these are transmitted directly to the implant. The level of implant stability is measured for values from 1 to 100 on a special ISQ scale. The higher the ISQ value, the more stable the implant. It is assumed that safe implant stability values are above 55 ISQ. It is also worth mentioning that the Osstell ISQ not only measures the primary stability of the implant, but also allows for comparative measurements, monitoring the healing process.

Implant stability measurement

Today, at the Luxdentica Dental Center, we need just 8 weeks to make the final crown on an implant. Traditional methods refer to a waiting time for the implant to fuse with the bone of 6 months in the upper part and 3 months in the lower part. In most cases, thanks to the use of Osstell ISQ, the patient no longer has to wait 6 or 3 months to successfully complete the implant treatment.

Osstell ISQ helps the dentists at Luxdentica Dental Center make a rational decision on when implants can be loaded. Most patients intuitively understand that implant stability measurements determine whether implants can be loaded or if they still need to wait. The use of Osstell ISQ gives both parties (dentist-patient) a sense of confidence, safety, and quality of treatment. Osstell ISQ also facilitates communication between implantologists, surgeons, and prosthodontists, who can objectively evaluate and compare the results of the medical procedure.

We use Osstell ISQ at the Luxdentica Dental Center as a standard procedure in implant treatment.
